The Shedd Aquarium has officially unveiled its enhanced entry experience, part of the transformative Welcome Plaza initiative under the Centennial Commitment. This upgrade not only improves accessibility and guest flow but also seamlessly blends modern functionality with Shedd’s historic Beaux-Arts architecture.
Klein & Hoffman contributed to this transformation as the Engineer of Record (EOR) for the entry space within the historic structure. Our team also provided Building Enclosure Consulting for the entry pavilions, ensuring a seamless integration of design, functionality, and preservation throughout the project. This project was a collaborative effort with outstanding contributions from Valerio Dewalt Train as architect, Pepper Construction Group/BMI Construction LLC as general contractor, and project manager JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle).
Working Together, we helped bring this vision to life while maintaining the integrity of this Chicago icon. The transformed entry now includes:
• A widened primary entrance to improve guest flow.
• State-of-the-art ticketing and security technology for a seamless start to your visit.
• Enhanced access to exhibits like the Abbott Oceanarium and Wild Reef.
• Amenities including a new Shedd store, Member Services Suite, & information desk.
Additionally, the atrium features “The Once and Forever Lake Michigan,” a breathtaking sculpture designed by artist David Franklin, comprising 1,600 porcelain fish representing native Lake Michigan species.
This milestone is part of Shedd’s Centennial Commitment to evolve guest experiences and drive conservation efforts leading up to its centennial in 2030.
We’re honored to have contributed to this transformative project, showcasing the expertise and collaborative spirit Klein & Hoffman brings. Read more about this project here: https://lnkd.in/eGDbc6er
