Originally built in 1929, the Mundelein Center is a 14-story concrete-framed, limestone-clad structure on Loyola University’s Lakeshore Campus and registered as a National Historic Landmark and an official Chicago Landmark. For this project, Klein & Hoffman received the 2012 Best Project Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI).

Professional Services

The major renovation design tasks noted above required an in-depth knowledge of the behavior of the existing structure and careful consideration of the details. The Klein & Hoffman team creatively took advantage of the reserve capacity in the existing structure and reinforced the elements to accommodate the new loading requirements. Our expertise in concrete repair and façade restoration and understanding of the materials’ behavior were key in the success of the project and realizing the Owner’s dream and the Architect’s objectives. In addition to various structural design software, 3-D Revit modeling was used, which proved extremely helpful in identifying conflicts ahead of time and averted major modifications during construction.
