Built in 1929, the Civic Opera Building is a 45-story steel framed structure. The building is a prominent historic structure along the Chicago River and has Landmark status.
Our team was tasked with assessing, designing, and then overseeing the renovation of the structure of the Washington Street sidewalk vault structure, followed by application of waterproofing and a new topping slab walking surface. After removal of the deteriorated structure was completed by the contractor, K&H had to review encountered additional deterioration at some adjacent areas and determine a repair to address it.
K&H performed a conditions assessment of the existing sidewalk vault at the onset of the project. A comprehensive report was developed along with an engineering opinion of cost for budgeting purposes for our client. Our services then moved on to creating construction documents for the repair/replacement of the deteriorated vault structure. K&H continued to the perform construction-related administrative services on the project until its completion.
