Adrian Smith Gordon Gill | Thornton Tomasetti | Charcoal Blue | Bulley & Andrews | ICL, and Show Canada
As a key player in the collaborative effort alongside Adrian Smith Gordon Gill, Thornton Tomasetti, Charcoal Blue, Bulley & Andrews, ICL, and Show Canada, K&H took charge of the structural engineering aspects of The Yard’s transformation at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theater. Our role involved navigating through challenges, including adhering to stringent design aesthetics, working within restricted floor-to-floor heights, and meeting an ambitious timeline. Our structural engineering team devised innovative solutions to seamlessly integrate movable seating towers into the existing infrastructure. Our commitment to excellence and meticulous attention to detail ensured the successful realization of a flexible theater space that surpassed expectations, showcasing our dedication to pushing boundaries in structural engineering. The result was a theater experience that could be rearranged in one of 8 different configurations to meet the various needs of the production. The showcase element is 9 four-story seating towers that can be moved and rearranged to encompass the different configurations.
