Klein & Hoffman was awarded the SEAOI Structural Engineers Association of Illinois‘ Excellence in Structural Engineering Award in the category ‘Best Project – Up to $10 Million’ for the project, ‘Deflecting Disaster: Rehabilitating Chicago’s Skyline’, led by Zelina Johnson, SE at SEAOI’s Awards Celebration last month. This award highlights the outstanding work of our structural team in addressing complex challenges with innovative solutions.
Beginning as a peer review of a 37-story residential building’s façade rehabilitation, extensive deflections, and chloride-induced deterioration were identified. K&H conducted thorough inspections and material testing supplemented by finite element analysis to diagnose the root cause. Unintentional oversights resulted in significantly reduced strength of the original design. A robust repair program using carbon fiber rods – resulting in significant cost and schedule savings – was developed, reestablishing the slabs’ structural integrity. Notably, over half of the balconies on the top 10 floors were replaced, totaling over 200 yards of newly placed concrete – equivalent to the weight of 103 elephants or four blue whales!
K&H was proud to be the event’s Dessert Sponsor and congratulates all the award winners.
