Following heavy rainfall the east wall of the Centennial Park Tennis Facility failed which resulted in the foundation wall collapse. As this wall collapsed inward, the roof framing which was supported by the wall dropped approximately five (5) feet pulling down and damaging the metal standing seam roof, roof decking, and top connections of the roof purlins. It was determined that the original design was inadequate to resist the lateral forces imposed on the foundation wall by earth and water pressure.
K&H provided a timely structural assessment of the emergency to determine the overall safety of the facility. The remaining buildings exhibited similar signs of distress, but to a much lesser degree. These signs included lateral inward deflection of the walls, rotated steel channels at the top of the walls, and horizontal cracks at the masonry and concrete interface.
K&H provided structural engineering services including the condition assessment, development of the repair documents, and construction services. The scope of work included rebuilding the collapsed wall, jacking up the existing glulam roof framing to reestablish the load path, rebuilding of the roofing and brick façade, and wall reinforcement of the other three (3) tennis court buildings. The investigation, development of repair documents, and construction were completed in a fast pace to allow the adjacent water park to remain open during the Spring and Summer.
