Friend Health is a new health clinic in an underserved community in Chicago’s south side.
The two-story building is converted from an existing retail store, constructed in the 1960’s from steel and precast plank structural framing. The brick and CMU exterior provides lateral support for the building floor framing. Even though only two stories tall, the building is constructed on deep foundations due to the fills at the site.

K&H provided the design of the building additions, including the large cantilever canopies at the entrances that provide a distinctive presence on the site. K&H worked with the geotechnical engineering team to review and present options for foundations for the building additions. These options were priced by the contractor and provided for owner review, who settled on helical piles. K&H provided numerous design modifications to work with existing conditions and discovered conditions, such as the relic foundations.
