Reimagining Soldier Field: Preserving History While Shaping What’s Next

As the Chicago Bears’ relocation plans continue to unfold, Klein & Hoffman imagines new possibilities for the historic structure of Soldier Field. Originally designed by Holabird & Roche and opened in 1924, the neo-classical colonnade evokes the spirit of the Roman Colosseum. As the Chicago Architecture Center describes, the stadium “exudes strength, resilience, and a sense of grandeur.” Though it was initially built as a multi-purpose civic arena, decades of renovations gradually shaped it into a football-centric stadium with ever-expanding spectator capacities.

A defining element of Soldier Field is its limestone façade; an enduring tribute to the craftsmanship of the early 20th century. Quarried from Indiana, the limestone was prized for its durability, uniform texture, and strength. Traditional hand-cut ashlar masonry allowed masons to construct the stadium’s massive colonnades with intricate precision. This careful work, reinforced during the stadium’s major 2003 renovation, has allowed the limestone to withstand the passage of time while retaining its historical beauty. Soldier Field stands today as a living example of how traditional materials and methods can meet modern challenges without losing their original character.

As discussions about a potential new stadium site in Museum Park or Arlington Heights continue, we ask: what new purpose could the historic colonnade serve? Could Soldier Field once again become a public space, restoring recreational areas to the city?

At Klein & Hoffman, we envision ways our building envelope experts could help preserve the limestone’s beauty and strength, ensuring it remains a symbol of resilience for generations to come.

While the future of Soldier Field is still taking shape, one thing remains clear: protecting its architectural legacy is essential.
