The John G. Shedd Aquarium pool currently serves as the encounters pool for private groups to have an up-close experience with the belugas and dolphins in the water. To accommodate the expanding sea lion population at the Shedd and assist in staging for the Oceanarium show, the Shedd is modifying the existing pool to provide a safe habitat for sea lion use.

Professional Services

Klein and Hoffman was retained to provide structural analysis, design, consultation, document preparation and construction administration services related to the renovations of the Grainger Pool to accommodate sea lions. The scope of services provided included close coordination with the Shedd’s Planning and Design department, sea lion trainers, and facility personnel to gain an understanding of the sea lion interaction with the habitat. Based on this information, load requirements were established for the structural design of the enclosures. Field measurement of the unique habitat, coordination with the general contractor to determine the most economical approach to the installation and contact with fabricators in the beginning stages of design were critical to maintaining the schedule and budget. Structural analysis of the acrylic framing, gates, and miscellaneous equipment covers was provided in addition to the development of construction drawings. The project was completed at the end of November 2016 and the sea lions are currently enjoying their new habitat.
