Chicago has launched a new energy code designed to improve the energy efficiency of new commercial buildings by 5%, based on the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code. However, some architects and developers are concerned that the new code, which aims to prevent new commercial buildings from contributing to climate change, could add complexity and expense to local building construction. Challenges for some stakeholders will be ensuring that substantial portions of the roofs of new commercial buildings are kept clear of obstructions to allow for the potential future addition of solar panels. Jason Wilen, architect and Associate Principal, notes that this will require careful planning and coordination among owners, contractors, and designers.
