Project Challenge:
Amtrak is committed to achieving a State of Good Repair (SOGR)
throughout its passenger rail transportation system. In addition
to SOGR considerations, Amtrak's stations are required to comply
with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
by 2010. To help achieve SOGR and ADA compliance, Klein and
Hoffman, Inc. (K&H) provided structural and architectural
services for detailed station assessments of 214 Amtrak stations
located in the Central, Southern and Western regions of the
country. The facilities varied in age from the 1880's to present
day construction.
Project Solution:
Utilizing Amtrak SOGR protocol, K&H performed condition
assessments on all structural and architectural components of
the station buildings, platforms and sites to evaluate their
condition and functionality. Any deficiencies discovered during
the assessments were noted.
K&H also evaluated each station to ensure compliance
with the provisions of related Amtrak and federally mandated
ADA accessibility guidelines.
K&H prepared assessment reports which included field
observations, photographs, sketches, dimensions, narratives
of the existing visible construction, interviews, recommendations
for repairs and cost estimates for the correction of any identified
station deficiencies or non-compliance issues.
