PROJECT: Transportation Building
Sidewalk Vault Restoration

Featured Structural Rehabilitation Projects/ Adaptive Reuse Projects

Project Challenge:

Many of the sidewalks located in downtown Chicago are actually structural systems with vault/basement space below that is used by the adjoining building. Due to the harsh weather related elements, many of the older buildings are in need of significant repair work.

Project Solution:

Klein and Hoffman (K&H) has developed significant expertise in the renovation of these structures. With a diverse understanding of these old structural systems, K&H is uniquely suited to identify the necessary repair work, develop accurate repair cost estimates, and proceed with the renovation project.

The Transportation Building contains heavy limestone facade panels that were temporarily supported while the remaining slab structure was removed and replaced.

K&H developed strengthening and replacement details for the severely corroded structural steel systems, and helped restore these sidewalk vaults to safe working order.
