Project Challenge:
When a neighborhood porch collapsed during a summer party, the
City of Chicago implemented a strict inspection schedule for
the tens of thousands of porches within the City limits.
Project Solution:
With staff experience as trade carpenters, and design experience
as structural engineers, Klein and Hoffman (K&H) responded
to the owner's need to conduct a thorough inspection of over
80 porches and identify locations that required reinforcing
or replacement.
K&H determined that some of the porches should be completely
replaced due to the prohibitive cost of strengthening options.
K&H developed trade-conscious details for a successful
project that met the stringent requirements of the Chicago
Building Code, provided safe porches for the residents and
peace of mind for the building owners.
