Project Challenge:
The Sacred Heart Parish Center consists of several buildings
including the church, built in 1927, and the grammar school,
built in 1929. Both masonry buildings required repair due
to long-term water infiltration; however, the 6-story bell
tower required significant structural rehabilitation on the
interior. The Diocese of Camden retained Klein and Hoffman
(K&H) to investigate the existing conditions and restore
these structures.
Project Solution:
K&H conducted a visual inspection of the exterior stone
masonry walls, lintels and parapets of the school and church
buildings to identify existing defects and distress. A detailed
inspection of the 134-foot tall bell tower from a high-reach
lift was also completed with the assistance of a masonry contractor.
K&H developed a repair/restoration program, provided
construction documentation, prepared an engineering opinion
of cost and is providing construction services throughout
the restoration process.
The repair program includes: masonry repair, steel lintel
replacement, parapet wall reconstruction, restoration of exterior
cast concrete ornamentation, new steel canopies above basement
door openings and the reconstruction of site retaining walls.
Rehabilitation of the bell tower includes the reinforcement
of interior concrete floors, the replacement of deteriorated
steel framing within the tower and design of a new stairway
access for the full height of the tower. K&H is also redesigning
the existing front steps of the church in order to improve
their functionality and aesthetics.
