Project Challenge:
In days gone by, Maxwell Street was known for its energetic,
community-based trade and retail district. Economic depression
of the community forced a decline in safety and business enterprises
relocated. Because the University of Illinois' Chicago Campus
is within blocks, the University wanted to help spark new retail
development. Due to the historical significance of several buildings,
it was deemed necessary, by the preservation community, to salvage
the building face.
Project Solution:
Klein and Hoffman (K&H) delivered a creative solution that
allowed an existing building facade to be braced while the structure
was demolished and a new building was reconstructed behind it.
Significant settlement resulted from extremely poor soil
conditions, so K&H designed a micro-pile system that could
be hydraulically pushed into the ground, and connected to
the foundation system in order to prohibit future settlement.
K&H combined its unique knowledge of old structures with
a compelling understanding for new technology to help the
University successfully develop this revitalized retail district.
