Structural Rehabilitation/ Adaptive Reuse

PROJECT: John G. Shedd Aquarium

Featured Structural Rehabilitation Projects/ Adaptive Reuse Projects

Project Challenge:

The Shedd Aquarium has implemented several massive facility upgrade programs in order to maintain its competitive edge as one of the most renowned aquariums in the country. However, in order to successfully incorporate the changes, extensive modifications to the existing structure were required.

Project Solution:

Klein and Hoffman (K&H) developed an economical structural system to extend some of the exhibits below the basement of the existing facility by lowering existing foundations and temporarily hanging the columns from adjacent structural
elements.

In order to excavate the existing subgrade, K&H worked with the contractor to develop an earth retention system that incorporated grouted soil tie-backs and a reinforced mesh wall comprised of spray-applied concrete (shot-crete).

New composite-steel floors and concrete walls were designed as a cost-effective means of creating new exhibit space below the building.
