Project Challenge:
Bell towers are one of the crowning achievements of great architecture
on historic churches. Unfortunately, many of the towers have
suffered tremendous deterioration due to poor weather conditions
and deferred maintenance costs.
Project Solution:
Klein and Hoffman (K&H) conducted an investigative study
to evaluate the condition of the existing bell towers at Holy
Trinity Polish Mission, and determined that significant work
would be required.
In order to provide temporary stability for the remainder
of the winter season, K&H developed a system of cables,
netting, and cornice blocking to prohibit any further movement
until the towers could be reconstructed.
In order to provide
long-term durability, K&H improved upon the original column
base details to ensure proper detailing to resist water intrusion.
Furthermore, K&H developed a stability scheme to underpin
the lower portion of the tower with new concrete beams, thereby
saving the additional reconstruction costs.
