Structural Rehabilitation/ Adaptive Reuse

PROJECT: Four Points Sheraton Hotel

Featured Structural Rehabilitation Projects/ Adaptive Reuse Projects

Project Challenge:

When the Marcus Corporation wanted to break into the Chicago "Magnificent Mile" hotel market, they needed a design team that could stretch an existing 5-story building to suit their needs.

Project Solution:

Klein and Hoffman (K&H) performed a structural feasibility study to verify the existing building's capacity to extend vertically to as many as 8-stories. This feasibility study provided critical structural modification concepts instrumental to ensuring a worthwhile investment.

K&H developed a foundation strengthening concept that was successfully implemented to enable the building to extend an additional three levels.

In order to maximize efficiency, K&H strategically located new wind bracing at locations where vertical loads were also transferred due to roof-level courtyard demolition.

K&H implemented new roof-top and internal trusses to successfully eliminate existing columns for programming needs.
