During expansion of the Philadelphia International Airport, US Airways determined the need for a new multi-level control tower to oversee their taxi lanes and gates. The only available real estate to construct the 190-foot tall, steel framed tower was a small planter bed. The tower cab was offset to provide the required lines of sight to the gates. The offset configuration causes uplift on the rear columns which are held down by drilled shafts.
