New Elevator
As the last remaining major structure from the 1893 World’s Fair, maintaining the original historic fabric of the building while providing greater accessibility was essential. Working closely with Museum management, the Illinois Historical Preservation Agency and the Commission on Chicago Landmarks a renovation program was developed that enabled full-scale construction work to occur simultaneously with the daily operation of the Museum’s exhibits. Work included expansion of an existing interior stairway, relocation of internal exit pathways and the addition of an elevator and exterior entrances.
