Once known for its energetic, community-based trade and retail district, economic depression forced a decline in safety and business enterprises relocated.  Within walking distance of the University of Illinois’ Chicago Campus the University wanted to help spark new retail development.  K&H combined its unique knowledge of old structures with a compelling understanding for new technology to successfully develop this revitalized retail district.  The historical significance of several Maxwell Street buildings required the preservation and salvage of a building face.  K&H delivered a creative solution that allowed an existing building facade to be braced while the structure was demolished and a new building was reconstructed behind it.
