The MFSE is Philadelphia’s primary east-west rail transit corridor and SEPTA’s busiest commuter line. Rail car maintenance was being performed at two separate shop facilities constructed in the 1900s. Their age, physical condition, and the maintenance requirements of a new state-of-the-art transit car fleet necessitated a comprehensive modernization of the facilities. An innovative design charrette approach consolidated all MFSE shop functions into a single, completely rebuilt maintenance shop and storage yard requiring intricate phased construction.
