The MWRA undertook an ambitious task of converting its “open” reservoir system to covered storage facilities. The new 20-million gallon below-grade storage facility was designed to be visually compatible with an existing 100 year old gatehouse. The project included a structural assessment and development of an extensive structural repair program for the historic gatehouse. A complex sequencing program was developed to keep the water distribution system in service while allowing for gatehouse modifications.
