To accommodate a $150-million arts and entertainment complex, the expansion of the Navy Pier required a design that would stand up to the harsh environmental conditions experienced along Lake Michigan.  The 2,400 by 50 foot pier expansion used more than 1,500 piles and 800 caissons for structural support and resistance to wave and storm serges.  To ensure that piles were driven properly, a special steel template was developed for installation of more than two thirds of the inclined (battered) piles, significantly reducing the number of rejected piles.
