City of Philadelphia Institutes Facade Ordinance
The City of Philadelphia has instituted a façade ordinance requiring periodic inspection of all buildings six or more stories in height and all buildings with any appurtenance in excess of 60 feet in height. The first round of inspections for buildings constructed in 1950 or earlier were due by June 30, 2011. The second round of inspections are due by June 30, 2012 for buildings constructed between 1951 and 1970. The inspection must include a physical, hands-on inspection of a representative sample of the building from a scaffold or other observation platform, conducted by or under the supervision of a licensed structural engineer or architect knowledgeable in the design, construction, and inspection of building facades.
