Project Challenge:
The North Miami Beach Community Redevelopment
Agency wanted to create a first of its kind multi-functional
facility for the community. The new building needed
space for retail, parking, and offices that is safe from the
effects of a Category 5 hurricane.
Project Solution:
Klein and Hoffman, Inc. (K&H) developed an economical
post-tensioned concrete framing system that optimized
floor spans, yet maintained the unique architectural
shape of the building. This structural system permitted
more open space in the office and retail floors and
resulted in more parking spaces in the garage levels.
In order to come up with a safe and economical structural
system to resist the potentially large wind forces, K&H
worked closely with the architect and a wind tunnel
consultant to optimize the wind loading on the structure.
Wind tunnel tests were conducted and the results were
used in producing a safe, cost-effective solution.
