Project Challenge:
When a new 16-story hotel convention center was proposed in
the Village of Wheeling, Klein and Hoffman (K&H) joined
the design-build team with creative solutions to help control
construction costs and provide the first building of its kind
for the community.
Project Solution:
K&H developed an aggressive program to implement a 4-foot
thick structural mat foundation that could be constructed more
quickly.
In order to economize the flat slab span-to-thickness ratio
with significant consideration for long-term deflection, K&H
developed an innovative staggered column layout with triangular
bays. This solution permitted conventional 8-inch slabs to
span 28 feet with a 30% reduction in deflection.
In order to increase the efficiency and cost of the longspan
convention hall, K&H worked with the design-builder to
implement a 24-foot tall slender load bearing precast curtainwall
system.
