New Structures

PROJECT: University Village Townhomes

Featured New Structure Projects

Project Challenge:

In a bold step toward regentrification, the South Campus Development Team invested $525 million in the redevelopment of a 25-acre urban housing neighborhood. This massive task required a creative structural engineer to control construction costs without sacrificing architectural appeal.

Project Solution:

Klein and Hoffman (K&H) developed and implemented an aggressive foundation solution to prohibit settlement on the extremely poor soil conditions. In order to avoid the deep foundation system recommended by others, K&H designed a cost-effective mat slab system to allow the buildings to "float" above the poor soil conditions.

In order to maximize open space in the residential units K&H also designed perforated steel girders with open wood trusses to facilitate flush ceiling assemblies.

K&H economized the cantilevered residential balconies, by designing a prefabricated system that could be inserted into the wood truss framing after the construction of the exterior walls.
