Project Challenge:
Lincoln Park Zoo wanted to create a unique building that enhanced
the learning environment for children by providing an interactive
facility. As an urban zoo, this building was faced with the
challenge of blending the natural habitat of the animals with
the surrounding highrise construction.
Project Solution:
Klein and Hoffman (K&H) successfully worked with the architect
and contractor to develop a structural system that incorporated
cost efficiency and emphasized the soft modernized style of
the building. A combination of exposed structural steel, precast
cantilevers, and
cast-in-place entry ways helped achieve these results.
In order to gracefully integrate the building into an urban
context, K&H worked with the architect to implement energy
and environmentally friendly "green" elements.
One of the pinnacle successes of the project was the development
of a two-story interactive climbing structure. K&H developed
a rigorous structural analysis process to maximize the gravity-defying
elements of the structure while adhering to strict safety requirements.
