Project Challenge:
Abbott Laboratories wanted to re-create the original house of
founder Dr. Abbott. However, the new building would function
differently and require higher design loads.
Project Solution:
The new facility is a hybrid of office, archive and museum that
is created to identically represent the original family residence
of Dr. Abbott. The Victorian style building needed creative
structural input to remain true to interior details and still
accomplish demanding program needs.
Klein and Hoffman (K&H) used an extremely diverse group
of building materials including: treated lumber, cold-formed
steel framing, structural steel framing, precast concrete,
masonry and cast-in-place concrete to make this a successful
project. The right balance of each material ensured that building
use was maximized.
