Project Challenge:
The MWRA undertook an ambitious task of converting its "open"
reservoir system to covered storage facilities in order to comply
with public health and water quality standards mandated by the
Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Klein and Hoffman, Inc. (K&H),
as prime consultant, provided structural engineering, design
and construction management services for the new below-grade
storage facility and related structures.
Project Solution:
A new 20-million-gallon covered storage facility was designed
and constructed within the configuration of existing Basin No.
3, with the remaining two open basins placed on emergency standby.
To satisfy site and operational constraints, the new covered
storage facility provided for three rectangular, cast-in-place
concrete tanks separated by common walls.
Designed new facilities that were visually compatible with the
existing gatehouse which had been nominated as a state historic
landmark. The gatehouse, nearly 100 years old, contains the
disinfection facilities, gates and valve controls for the supply
and distribution system.
Developed and managed a complex sequencing program which kept
the water distribution system in service during construction
and allowed for modifications to the 100 year-old gatehouse.
Minimized disturbance to neighboring wetlands and other natural
habitats.
Replaced 100-year-old pipelines during modifications to Basin
Number 1, without interrupting service.
