Project Challenge:
In the century since its construction, this 1903 Daniel Burnham
terra cotta masterpiece had weathered the harsh Lake Michigan
climate admirably, but was beginning to show signs of widespread
distress. While reasonably well maintained in the past, the
building's facades had reached a critical juncture. The owners
were searching for an engineering firm to provide a full range
of services to preserve the building's historic terra cotta
and brick facades.
Project Solution:
Serving as Engineer of Record since 1999, Klein and Hoffman
(K&H) has provided engineering services for the owners including
surveys, condition studies, repair details, facade ordinance
reports and field services for numerous repair/restoration programs.
Significant historic preservation issues needed to be considered
and integrated into the repairs for this landmark structure.
K&H took the lead in surveying the three terra cotta facades
and assembled specifications for ordering newly manufactured
replacement pieces, matching the originals in color, texture
and finish. Original documentation was researched and reviewed
to provide the owners with historically accurate repairs.
K&H also coordinated repair phasing to coincide with the
City of Chicago's Facade Ordinance inspection cycle, thus
saving the owners considerable expense.
As a result of the owners' commitment and K&H's diligence,
the Santa Fe's unique facades have been preserved for the
generations to come.
