Project Challenge:
The owners of the Chicago Board of Trade needed an engineering
firm to take charge of the day-to-day inspection, maintenance
and repair of the facades of their three building complex in
Chicago's Loop. The facade of the old North Building, designed
by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White in 1929, required a
full investigation, assessment and development of a work plan
to prevent further deterioration. The building's landmark status
presented additional hurdles to the facade repair program.
Project Solution:
After a thorough facade investigation, Klein and Hoffman (K&H)
prepared an aggressive and comprehensive repair/restoration
program to be completed in a two-year period.
Working closely with the owners, we prepared detailed repair
drawings and specifications, a cost estimate for the work
and have provided continuing in-field services to: designate
repairs; modify repair details to conform to existing conditions
and collaborated with the masonry contractor to develop innovative
and effective repair techniques.
Standard repairs were modified and augmented to achieve truly
lasting and effective solutions to complex technical conditions.
