Project Challenge:
The City of Chicago's Exterior Wall Maintenance Ordinance requires
100% inspection of buildings with terra cotta cladding exteriors.
The tower and finials of the 680 North Lake Shore Drive building
are impossible to access using traditional means. The owner
was looking for an engineering firm with the ability to overcome
this obstacle while maintaining reasonable budgetary constraints.
Project Solution:
Klein and Hoffman (K&H) has been performing work on the
680 North Lake Shore Drive Building for over 10 years. To fulfill
the 100% inspection requirements of the ordinance, K&H retained
Vertical Access of New York to assist with the inspection of
the tower and finials. K&H, along with Vertical Access,
successfully completed the inspection by using rappelling techniques.
Keeping safety a major priority, K&H developed a multi-year
rehabilitation program to overcome budgetary constraints.
